With A Dead Man in Deptford, Burgess concluded his literary career to overwhelming acclaim for his re-creation of the Elizabethan poet Christopher Marlowe. In lavish, pitch-perfect, and supple, readable prose, Burgess matches his splendid Shakespeare novel, Nothing Like the Sun. The whole world of Elizabethan England—from the intrigues of the courtroom, through the violent streets of London, to the glory of the theater—comes alive in this joyous celebration of the life of Christopher Marlowe, murdered in suspicious circumstances in a tavern brawl in Deptford more than four hundred years ago.

The murder of Christopher Marlowe is one of the great ‘what if’s of English history. Would Shakespeare have been better with a near-equal snapping at his heels, or would it have made no real difference?
And then again, was Marlowe’s loss the result of a drunken brawl, or a covert operation against any challenge to Europe’s first Nationalized Church?
But there’s more: this is a great novel by a great modern novelist; several contemporary writers (Robert Galbraith among them) might easily consider Anthony Burgess their dead shepherd.

Echo SaraSt4r. Earthly Powers is a magnificent, superb book. Any work of Burgess is more than welcome. A Clockwork Orange receives inordinate, outsized attention, for what is actually one of his minor bks.

Appropriately enough, Mastram, Burgess wrote a brilliant guide to Joyce (”Here Comes Everybody”) - I remember reading it (too quickly) in university.
Burgess was a Joyce fanatic.

And a book on linguistics & English (”A Mouthful of Air”) that we also used. I still have it on the shelf.
